Smart Kids Make Smart Moves Manual

  • Description of Resource:

This manual, published by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), provides activity curricula for developing healthy living skills in children ages 6-9 with regard to avoiding risky behaviors and situations, including alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. It is specifically adapted for youth in Native communities and includes skill-building activities for developing self-awareness, interpersonal skills, decision-making skills, and drug awareness as well as closure activities.

This manual is adapted from BGCA's SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) prevention/education program. SMART Moves addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. SMART Kids was published in March 2003 through a partnership of BGCA, the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention, and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Native American Programs. An advisory group comprised of experts who were knowledgeable regarding both SMART Moves and the target population reviewed the program and identified adaptations to make the curriculum more reflective of Native American culture. Due to the flexible nature of SMART Moves, local Native Clubs also have the ability to create their own activities and supplemental materials that best reflect their local culture and traditions.
